Meeting the Minor Gods

Hello Campers, and welcome to the fourth edition of Meeting the Minor Gods! We all know about the Olympians and how they came to be in power, but have you ever wondered who some of the other gods are? Today we will be learning a little more about the Fates!

The Fates, or as they were known to the Greeks, The Moirae, were the goddess of destiny. There were three, and each one had a specific job;

  • Clotho was responsible for spinning the thread of human life and decided when they were born,.

  • Lachesis was the apportioner, deciding how much time for life was to be allowed for each person or being.

  • Atropos who chose the mechanism of death and ended the life of mortals by cutting their thread with her "abhorred shears”.

They controlled the thread of life of every mortal from birth to death. They were independent, directing the line of fate, and ensuring that the assigned fate took its course without obstruction.

All beings, whether god or mortal, were at their mercy and submitted to them.

Fun Facts:

  • The Fates are the daughters of the Primordial goddess Nyx

  • Their Roman counterparts are The Parcae (Nona, Decima, Morta)

  • Their Egyptian counterparts are The Hemsut

  • Their Norse counterparts are The Norns

  • They participated in the Gigantomachy, killing the giants Agrios and Thoas
